QUEENSLAND Roar's youth squad has been finalised by coach Rado Vidosic ahead of the club’s National Youth League campaign, starting on September 26.
Vidosic and head coach Frank Farina drew upon talent in the local Brisbane leagues in selecting the 12-man squad, which is made up of players aged between 17 and 21.
The Roar assistant coach said players were handpicked on their potential ability and compatibility with the A-League’s style.
"It’s a very exciting time for us at the club to have the first Queensland Roar National Youth League team assembled," Vidosic said.
"If there was no National Youth League, these players would not play at all over the summer.
"Now, the National Youth League gives them an opportunity to continue to play during the summer and at a step above where they’ve been playing so far."
Seven teams make up the competition which runs over 21 rounds, with the top two competing in a Grand Final.
Teams can select only 10-12 youth players, with up to eight under-21 first-team players and four overage players eligible to make up the 15-man match squad.
Vidosic said the focus was more on development than results.
"If we can perform well and build on that performance that would be very, very good," he said.
Queensland Roar youth midfielder Adam Sarota said he was excited to be training full-time with the likes of Craig Moore and Danny Tiatto.
"It’s really good that they’re here," Sarota said. "They help you as you’re training so you can only get better."
The Brisbane Strikers star said Farina’s faith in youth gave him hope of cracking into the first team.
"It’s one of the main reasons why I signed a contract. Not just Frank, but Rado is a good coach as well."
Queensland Roar Youth’s campaign kicks off away to Melbourne Victory Youth on Friday, 26 September.
