The A-League curtain-raiser saw Queensland Roar come from behind to overrun their opponents as Chris Grossman bagged a double to complement McVey’s first-half equaliser.

Melbourne started much the stronger and looked sharp as they knocked the ball around the Suncorp Stadium surface with confidence.

On 11 minutes the visitors had a deserved lead after Dimitri Hatzimouratis ran on to a through ball and held off the Roar defence to slide the ball under Griffin McMaster in the Queensland goal.

Roar responded positively through Tyler Thurtell, whose long range shot forced a good save from Victory custodian Mijo Marinovic and from the resultant corner Ben Griffin headed over the bar.

Melbourne continued to push forward and Hatzimouratis was again in the thick of the action, forcing a save from McMaster with a stinging effort.

Gradually Queensland began to exert a serious influence on the match and they were rewarded with a goal from McVey on 34 minutes.

The marksman ran onto a long ball and lobbed the oncoming Marinovic to draw the teams level.

The goal proved a spark for the home side as they looked to take control of the match and Mitchell Bevan curled a shot just wide of the goal three minutes later.

The sides were locked at 1-1 at the break, but the second half was barely underway when both sides had the opportunity to grab the lead.

Melbourne’s Fabio Di Lizia volleyed over the bar from the edge of the six yard box following a corner, before Chris Grossman bustled his way through the Victory defence only to see his shot from the angle go wide of the goal.

Both sides continued to threaten the goal, but neither forced a save from the respective goalkeepers.

However on 60 minutes Grossman put the home side in front for the first time beating Marinovic at the near post after the Victory keeper had spilled a shot from McVey.

As Melbourne looked to equalise they left gaps at the back and were nearly punished when McVey’s clever through ball found Michael Angus in front of goal but his first-time shot went wide.

Then on 87 minutes Grossman made sure of the win with his fifth goal of the campaign and second of the night.

Angus’s perfect through ball was collected by the midfielder who jinked past his marker and slotted his left-foot shot neatly through the legs of Marinovic.

Victory continued to attack after the goal but the Roar defence held strong to ensure the three points.
