A GOAL bonanza concluded the 2008 Roar Roadshows last night as Queensland beat a Brisbane Select XI 8-1 at East Brisbane.
It took Queensland Roar only three minutes to open the scoring with a spectacular strike from distance by Andrew Packer.
After intercepting the ball just inside the opposition’s half, the left fullback took the ball onto his right foot and unleashed a cracking drive from 30 metres into the back of the net.
In the 14th minute, however, the Select team equalized with a James Baty (Easts) penalty after Roar ‘keeper Griffin McMaster brought down Domenic Hudak (Easts) inside the area
Queensland went back in front 10 minutes later when Sergio van Dijk’s cross from the left wing found the head of Tim Smits who nodded into the bottom corner of the net.
Smits added his second and Queensland’s third in the 29th minute after a good ball from van Dijk opened the play to Matt McKay on the left who whipped across to Smits who again showed his aerial prowess with a header into the bottom corner.
Roar went four up just before half time after van Dijk found space in the middle of the park and showed no hesitation in ripping the ball into the roof of the net from 25 metres.
Brisbane Select gained focus at the break and it wasn’t until 24 minutes into the second half that Queensland found the net again thanks to a neat, low finish from McKay inside the box.
Substitute Tommy Oar continued his impressive pre-season run in the 70th minute, albeit with the simplest of tap-ins after a Seo cross was fumbled by goalkeeper Tom Carroll (Easts).
Queensland profited from another defensive mistake four minutes later after an Oar cross caused confusion in the Select defence leading to an own goal.
Smits rounded out his hat-trick and Queensland’s eighth goal in the final minute after he found himself with just the ‘keeper to beat.
With a clever first touch, Smits rounded the out-rushing Carroll and passed the ball into the open net to conclude an entertaining night and a successful end to the Roar Roadshows.
Queensland’s next opponents will be Brazilian giants Palmeiras on July 12 at Suncorp Stadium in the Roar Against Racism showpiece.
