Despite missing six weeks with a heel injury and playing just 17 regular-season matches, the German midfielder was a clear winner of the award.

Broich finished with 390 votes from his playing peers, ahead of teammate Besart Berisha (252 votes), who was ineligible due to suspension, and Melbourne Victory's Archie Thompson (243).

Broich's success means it is five years since an Australian player won the award, with then-Newcastle Jets forward Joel Griffiths the last to clinch it in 2007-08.

Since then, New Zealand's Shane Smeltz (2008-09), Costa Rican Carlos Hernandez (2009-10) and Argentine Marcos Flores (2010-11) have received the accolade.

Central Coast Mariners head coach Graham Arnold won the coach of the year award, while one of his key players, Matthew Ryan, claimed the goalkeeper of the year and NAB young footballer of the year awards.

It was the second successive season that Ryan, aged 20, was nominated as the best youngster in the country.

Brisbane Roar forward Berisha collected the golden boot award thanks to his 19 regular-season goals, while Hernandez won the goal of the year for his strike against the Central Coast Mariners on February 10.

Brisbane continued to dominate the ceremony, picking up the fair play award as well.

Canberra United midfielder Sally Shipard won the Julie Dolan Medal for the best player in the W-League, ahead of Melbourne Victory's Jodie Taylor and Brisbane Roar's Tameka Butt.

Canberra shot-stopper Lydia Williams claimed the goalkeeper of the year and players' player of the year awards, her teammate Michelle Heyman won the golden boot thanks to her 12-goal haul, while Melbourne Victory's Ashley Brown won the young player of the year award.

Canberra and Victory were joint winners of the fair play award and manager of the former, Jitka Klimkova, won the coach of the year.

Adelaide United's Racheal Quiqley won the goal of the year for her effort against the Perth Glory on November 5.

In the National Youth League, Brisbane Roar's Nick Fitzgerald scooped the player of the year award, while Mitchell Mallia of Sydney FC won the golden boot for his 13 strikes across the season.

Brisbane Roar won the fair play award in the youth competition.

Jarred Gillett was awarded the A-League referee of the year, while Kate Jacewicz took out the prize in the W-League.
