EXCLUSIVE: Meeting David Beckham has reinvigorated Sasho Petrovski’s hopes of an A-League return with the prolific striker stressing he hasn’t retired from professional football.
Petrovski spoke with Beckham at the exclusive after-party following LA Galaxy’s victory over Melbourne Victory on Tuesday night.
And after watching the 36-year-old superstar play, it’s clearly reignited Petrovski’s desire to make himself available for an A-League contract, even if he too is the same age as the former Real Madrid and Manchester United superstar.
“Beckham and I, we’ve got a pretty good friendship after last year when we played against each other in Newcastle,” he told au.fourfourtwo.com.
Petrovski, a former Sydney FC, Central Coast Mariners and Newcastle Jets star, who scored over 40 times in the A-League, reminded the superstar of his last visit to Australia in 2010 when Galaxy lost to the Jets 2-1.
“I had a chat with him on Tuesday and asked him if he remembered me, and he goes, ‘Oh yeah, you’re the guy who played for the Jets and scored against us!’”
Petrovski added that his A-League career hadn’t officially ended.
Eyebrows were raised when the Jets didn’t come to an agreement with Petrovski for another contract.
Incredibly, playing the entire season from the bench, the former Socceroo finished the season as the Jets’ top scorer.
Petrovski, who is also managed by the Galaxy tour promoter Lou Sticca from Tribal Sports Management, said A-League clubs are crying out for top quality strikers.
And while some may scoff, he’s serious and has asked player agent Lou Sticca to test the water for him.
“I said to Lou, why don’t you put the feelers out? I’m still very fit, I feel very fresh and I’ve had a good break,” Petrovski said.
The one-time Danish based striker returned to his old stomping ground Wollongong after his Jets exit, playing a key role on and off the park at NSWPL club South Coast Wolves.
“I’m going to play as long as I can. I’ll play anywhere basically if the coaches and clubs are happy and want my services," he said.
“If people are happy with my performances then I’ll give it my best shot.”
Petrovski said that the Galaxy tour was another way to show off the world game to Australian fans.
He added: “Becks has been a true professional. I think it was a great advert for the game to have these games and promote A-League clubs across the country and around the world.
“It’s good to see that Lou from Tribal Sports Management has done a marvellous job and needs to be applauded for it.”
For fans who want to grab another slice of the Petrovski magic, he will be a special guest player in a celebrity beach soccer match this Sunday in Wollongong.
The game between a WIN TV side and the National Breast Cancer Foundation team will feature many of the players who, alongside Petrovski, won the first ever A-League championship with Sydney FC, including Jacob Timpano, Uffy Talay, Alvin Ceccoli and Stevie Corica.
