The Central Coast Mariners striker pounced on the opening day of season four in a 1-1 draw against Newcastle Jets at EnergyAustralia Stadium just days after returning from Olympic duties with the Olyroos.

He rubbed further salt into Newcastle wounds by bagging the winning goal in a 2-1 Boxing Day triumph in round 17.  

 "A lot of weight off came off my shoulders that night against Newcastle in the first match of last season," Simon told au.fourfourtwo.com.

"The gaffer knew I had goals in me and so did I. Coming home from the Olympics and getting that goal straight away was perfect. I didn't have to worry any more."  

Simon was on target in round one again this year as he fired the Mariners ahead against Melbourne Victory last week en route to their surprise 2-0 win.  

"Every striker wants to get off the mark and as soon as you do your confidence is good," he said. "People ask me how many will you get? I say: Get the first one and we'll go from there.  

"We scored early on in Melbourne and we know from past experience that it can be a dangerous score, especially so early in the match. I think it's a credit as to how we defended."  

Simon's attention is now focused on adding another three points to the tally and to hit the back of the net against Newcastle once more.  

He added: "I love playing in this derby and hopefully the members and supporters will get out in numbers. It's also Hutcho's (John Hutchinson) 100th game so it should be a special night.  

"Newcastle have some very experienced players at the back but I'll just play my usual game and look to help us take the points. Newcastle will also be confident after that win over Wellington so you should have two sides out there playing with confidence."
