EXCLUSIVE Sydney FC’s Rhyan Grant says he’s not much of a singer but hopes the Sky Blues' team song is ringing out after Thursday’s Blockbuster Big Blue with Victory at AAMI.
The Sydney boys belted out their team song to end a six match win-less streak on Sunday after overcoming Gold Coast 2-1 at the SFS.
Winning has lifted the pressure that was building on the star-studded Sky Blue side as they look towards Thursday’s Big Blue against Victory in Melbourne.
“Overall we were the better team. We did it the hard way but finally got the win," Grant, 20, told au.fourfourtwo.com.
“All the boys were buzzing. It’s been a while since we got to sing our team song so it was good to finally yell it out. It was a great feeling and a weight lifted off our shoulders. We’ve been under the pump lately.
“Hopefully it gives us that little bit of confidence to kick on against Melbourne, because they’ve a great squad too."
However, the song itself remains somewhat of a mystery with Grant refusing to offer much on its style or lyrics.
“It’s a little one that Karol Kisel brought with him when he signed a couple of years ago for us.
“It’s in English, but there’s a bit of an accent and a few different words used,” said a coy Grant who joked, “I’m not the best I just sing-a-long and keep it down.”
This season’s second installment of what is the most-bitter rivalry in the A-League looms as one that could shape the destiny of both sides’ seasons.
On the opening day of the season, the two sides played out a 0-0 draw in front of over 40,000 at Etihad.
Now with Victory four points behind Sydney and one spot out of the six, this will be a crucial game for both in front of what is expected to be 25,000 plus at AAMI Park.
Sunday’s three points were deserved, said Grant, who believed it was the springboard they need heading into what is a crucial fixture.
“We think we’re one of the biggest clubs in Australia and we feel we should be in the top two at least.
“Hopefully we can turn our season around and give us a kick up the butt and push on for the rest of the season," he said.
“It’s a crucial game for both teams. They’ve come off a big loss in Perth and they’ll come out firing. It is a big game with a great crowd."
With hot temperatures predicted and a 4pm kick-off, Sydney FC will use all their reserves of fitness against a side that’s suffered a number of fade-outs this season.
And with Victory arriving back in Melbourne on Monday from Perth, the short-turnaround could be a window of opportunity for Sydney, known for their physical endurance.
“It is a bit short-turnaround. We had it too. Both teams will be feeling it but we’re fit enough and that’s our profession and we have to deal with it.
“In this league any team is capable of a win on the day. It’s just a matter of us turning up and putting on our A-game and hopefully get a good start and dominate Melbourne."
He added: “It’s always a great atmosphere down there. But once the first whistle goes you don’t pay too much attention to it.
“I don’t think it’ll be an issue for our boys and hopefully we can upset them and come away with a win.”
