EXCLUSIVE: Gold Coast United’s healing process is underway with supporters swapping angry banners for a social sausage sizzle with owner Clive Palmer.
The official Gold Coast United Supporters Club is looking to the future rather than dwelling on the past after the turbulent recent weeks.
With the club's controversial crowd cap binned and ticket prices slashed, hopes are high football fans will begin to embrace the club - starting against Sydney FC on Saturday night, and existing fans are keen to move on.
"We have made our point and we now look to the future, hopefully a positive future," Gold Coast United Supporters Club secretary Terry Hands told au.fourfourtwo.com today.
"I think the overwhelming majority of fans are ready to move on and not dwell on any negative stuff."
Hands revealed the first steps have already been taken after players invited fans to a training session and BBQ this week with the players forking out for the food from their own pockets.
"It was a great gesture by the players and it was an event that also saw both Clive Palmer and Clive Mensink there and talking to fans," said Hands. "The players really appreciate the supporters and they are all very upbeat."
Hands and his fellow fans are hopeful that this week's developments will see stayaway fans return and first-time fans tempted through the gates. Adult tickets are $19 with accompanied children under 15 getting in free.
"There are no excuses in terms of price. We're no longer the most expensive ticket in the A-League," said Hands. "I'm very hopeful that we get a good turnout and that it's the start of something really positive.
"We believe we have a club here and a team here that can be a genuine A-League success. As I said, the players are all very positive so now it's over to them to do the business against Sydney."
Sydney FC's fans will be made welcome by the Gold Coast United Supporters Club with the group recognising the importance of visiting supporters.
Hands added: "We've been told there's at least 130 coming up from Sydney, hopefully approaching 200 on the day, and that's great.
"A bus has been hired to take some of our fans into Surfers Paradise on Saturday and it will be great to mingle with the Sydney fans and enjoy the banter.
"The message is to get out there and support your club and your team."
