In the tenth minute,  Bridges fired narrowly wide but the deadlock was broken just two minutes later.   Another positive build up by the Jets saw Marko Jesic's shot saved by the keeper but a pouncing Ali Abbas took advantage to tuck the ball home.

Bridges was narrowly off target again before Branko Culina's men doubled their advantage in the 25th minute - a classy chip from the edge of the box by Sean Rooney.

Nikolai Topor Stanley made it three, pouncing on a nod down from Jobe Wheelhouse.

Newcastle almost added a fourth goal on the stroke of half time after Jesic shot wide.

The Jets made two half time changes with Mario Simic and Tarek Elrich replacing Kasey Wehrman and Brodie Mooy.

The half began much like the first with Rockdale having the first opportunity, a shot from the right hand side forcing Ben Kennedy to make a regulation save.

Culina then took the opportunity in the 51st minute to give Paul Henderson some game time between the posts.

The Jets  immediately regained control and dominated the second half. In the 59th minute, Culina's men were awarded another free kick on the edge of the box and this time Jesic made no mistake, driving a right footed cracker into the roof of the net.

Newcastle made further substitutions in 58th, 60th and 61st minutes with Fiorentina, Patafta, Taylor, Haliti and Petrovski all getting some valuable game time.  Rockdale City continued to try hard and forced Henderson into saves on 78 and 80. Patafta almost got his name on the score sheet when his shot was saved by young Rockdale City keeper, James Cane.

Branko Culina said:  "It was alright, we did enough, I am happy to see us playing with a bit more tempo but once we got two or three in front bit was a bit easy.

"We still have a lot of improvement left, the positive is that we trialled two different formations  and everybody got some game time.  That is important because there are still positions up for grabs and it is important that we played the two formations".

Captain Michael Bridges said: "A good game to finish the pre-season but we are expected to win these games.

"However, it was good to see that we did not concede a goal which was a result of a stronger defensive shape than last season."
