A SECOND half double from star striker Shane Smeltz sealed a 2-0 win for Perth Glory over Football West Premier League side Stirling Lions last night.
Introduced at half-time, Smeltz showed why he's one of the best forwards in the Hyundai A-League with two goals in the space of 11 minutes.
The first arrived on 56 minutes after Liam Miller charged through the midfield. Having beaten four players, Miller passed the ball to Smeltz who expertly finished from 10 metres.
Smeltz's second was a classic from long range. Given time to line up his strike from 30 metres, Smeltz picked his spot and drilled in his fourth goal in two games.
The match against a very competitive Lions outfit was another good hit-out for Perth Glory, with the 2011/12 Hyundai A-League season now just a month away.
Perth Glory coach Ian Ferguson again rotated his squad to ensure all his players get quality game time over the next fortnight.
Bas van den Brink, Chris Coyne, Scott Neville, Todd Howarth and Adam Hughes were all rested, with another game to follow this weekend.
New striker Billy Mehmut started the game, as Perth Glory looked lively from the outset.
On 18 minutes, Miller whizzed past two defender but his pass from the byeline was hurried away.
Jacob Burns then came close but his stinging shot from 18 metres was deflected away for a corner
The home side also had their chances with Neil Young forced to make two sharp saves.
Four changes were made at half-time and the introduction of Smeltz was significant.
Young guns Blamo Quaqua, goal keeper Lewis Hamilton and Ryan Lowry, the brother of Qantas Socceroo Shane, were also all introduced.
Perth looked better in the second half and should’ve scored more, though Steven McGarry and Jesse Makarounas both narrowly missed chances from the excellent wide service of Travis Dodd and Evan Berger.
Perth Glory: 2 (Smeltz 56', 67')
