After last night’s emphatic 4-2 win over Melbourne Victory, with Smeltz grabbing a stunning quartet of goals, Glory remain in town to prepare for a much-awaited home final in the A-League.

With their opponent to be decided later on Sunday, Smeltz sensed the Glory could be a dark horse for the finals no matter who they play.

"I don't have a preference, just looking forward to whoever comes our way," Smeltz said at Sunday’s morning recovery session.

“We have to keep our heads and this is where we wanted to be, producing at the right time. The finals have come at a good time and it’s a credit to everyone involved.”

Smeltz has racked up a four-goal haul before playing for his previous club Gold Coast.

“You don’t score four goals every day so it’s right up there," he said with more than a hint of pride.

Smeltz also backed coach Ian Ferguson in his quest for another first team contract.

Ferguson meets with club owner Tony Sage on Monday to seek a resolution ahead of the finals.

“If you look around the club there are a lot of players who’ve played finals football so it’s fantastic.

“We’ve got a lot of experience here and as you saw from last night some good youth coming through. There’s a good blend here, Fergie’s put this squad together and it’s produced.”

On Saturday night youngsters Brandon O’Neill and Jesse Makarounas were just two of the youngsters given game time as the club’s bigger names sat out through injury.

The Kiwi World Cup star played down those injury concerns with playmaker Liam Miller and midfield general Jacob Burns under a cloud ahead of next week.

And while their big names are expected back for next week’s blockbuster, Smeltz emphasized that Saturday night’s win at nib Stadium bode well for the future.

“There were some good signs last night. We played some good youngsters who are coming through which is a great sign for the club’s future.”

“All credit to them for stepping up to the plate and producing."

And Smeltz sensed he was back in form after an injury stint. Saturday night against Victory was his second 90 minutes after missing three games through injury.

“Last week was probably tough coming back fitness wise. But I felt a lot better this week and really looking forward to the finals.

“If you take confidence and belief into the finals and get the right result in the first game it can just flow on from there."

Smeltz knows all about big games having played and scored at the 2010 World Cup as well as previous A-League finals series.

“It’ll be like a Cup final in that it could be your final game."

He added: “You’re playing to play again. Mentally it’s all on the line. And it’s a great reward for the fans who’ve been waiting a few years for a home final."
