GOLD Coast United have confirmed they've signed Dutch striker Maceo Rigters at the expense of newly-ditched American Alex Smith before he even played a competitive game.
Former Blackburn Robers striker Rigters, 27, who has also played for Dutch outfits Heerenveen, Dordrecht and NAC Breda, is expected to touch down on the Gold Coast tomorrow.
The new signing now has a chance of playing a part in United’s friendly match against Melbourne Victory at Owen Park this Sunday, kick off 3pm.
Rigters becomes United’s third Dutch import for the season following the signing of Paul Beekmans and Peter Jungschlager earlier this year.
The striker will replace Smith who has been plagued with a troublesome ankle injury during the pre-season campaign and is believed to have had at least part of his contract paid out to make way for Rigters.
“Maceo has a very good pedigree and we have had positive reports from our two other Dutch players about his qualities – they both know him quite well,” said coach Miron Bleiberg.
“He gets here on Friday and we will see how he is feeling after his travels, but hopefully he will be able to take part in the match on Sunday.
“We’re all looking forward to taking on Hyundai A-League opposition and as I’ve said before it will give us a good indication of what we need to work on between now and the start of the season.”
