SOUTH Melbourne has affirmed itself as the title favourite after a stunning 6-0 ANZAC Day Cup win over Hume City.
The visitors were irresistible in wet conditions against a relatively undermanned City side.
Striker Gianni De Nittis bagged four goals to win the trophy for Best and Fairest player on the day and take his season tally to five while Fernando De Moraes and Daniel Vasilevski also got on the scoresheet, the latter with a superb free kick.
Hume was without player-coach Andrew Vlahos on the pitch, midfielder Ross Thompson and striker Zoran Petrevski but the missing trio was no excuse for its capitulation.
A light drizzle fell as the Last Post and the Turkish and Australian national anthems played out in remembrance of those who fell in war.
When the action got underway, it was City who pushed forward with the breeze and Michael Bosevski shot a long-range free kick wide in the opening minute.
Hume was happy to swing long balls into the area early on with striker Turhan Sumbul causing trouble for the South defence.
Keeper Peter Zois was forced to punch a number of balls clear in the opening exchanges.
But the visitors created the first clear-cut opportunity of the game through the lively Joe Keenan.
He moved clear of the City defence in the seventh minute on the counter attack, but he shot narrowly wide of Lupce Acevski's goal from the edge of the area.
The City offside trap was proving hard to break for the visitors in a game that was developing into a tough midfield battle.
South had another good opportunity after a defensive mix-up in the 23rd minute.
Two City defenders flew for the same ball inside their defensive area, but it fell for Vasilevski who forced a parry by Acevski in the City goal.
Hume had its best chance of the opening period on the half hour.
Hard working midfielder Tansel Baser got free on the edge of the area and forced Zois to parry his shot from the angle.
The last 10 minutes of the half would prove game breaking as South produced some scintillating football.
On 36 minutes, Keenan fed De Moraes who, after twisting and turning outside the area, put his shot into the corner of the net to send the travelling fans into raptures in heavy rain.
South was in control of the midfield and doubled its lead five minutes later.
Carl Recchia played Keenan through on the right and his cut back found De Nittis at the back post to prod home.
From the resulting kick off, South retained possession and the underrated Sebastian Petrovic slid De Nittis behind the City defence.
The 23-year-old had beaten the offside trap and despite the best efforts of Isiyan Erdogan, he put the ball past the advancing Acevski.
If there was any hope of a remarkable comeback it was snuffed out by South's fourth after 52 minutes.
In a scrappy piece of play, Keenan fed the ball to De Nittis who cut back for De Moraes.
His shot was cleared off the line, rebounded back to him before his second shot fell for De Nittis, who put away his hat trick.
City enjoyed a couple of opportunities in the next 20 minutes.
Former Melbourne Victory defender Steven Pace's header went over the bar from a corner.
South continued chasing goals but De Moraes could only shoot directly at Acevski after Keenan's pass.
The visitors were fruitful on the counter attack but Keenan could only shoot directly at the City custodian after exchanging passes with Vasilevski.
City probably should have opened its account after 63 minutes, but quiet midfielder Alfonso Opazo put his header wide from six yards.
Moments later, striker Richard Cardozo shot wide after having a free kick teed up and Sumbul put a header over the bar as the home side began to look dangerous down the left hand side.
But Vasilevski provided the highlight of the day on 73 minutes.
With a free kick awarded 25 yards out with barely any angle, the 28-year-old swung a curling rocket into the top right hand corner of Acevski's net, leaving the keeper helpless.
South was not done yet and capitalised on another shocking defensive error by Hume.
De Moraes intercepted the pass on the left and put another ball across for De Nittis who struck home his fourth and his team's sixth.
Captain Rama Tavsancioglu accepted the ANZAC Day Cup as South retained the trophy and sat atop the table overnight.
