EXCLUSIVE: Former Barcelona B and FC Girona midfielder Alberto Manga has arrived in Sydney with hopes of an A-League contract.
The versatile 29-year-old midfielder slipped into town last week as a free agent after spending the last two seasons at Catalan club FC Girona in the Spanish Segunda (second) division.
Manga will train with NSW clubs Marconi and Sydney Olympic over the coming weeks while the A-League is in its off-season. The Catalan born Manga hopes to gain a short-term contract with either club to put him in the A-League shop window for next season.
Manga's YouTube highlights suggest he could be a very handy A-League acquisition as a midfield linkman who can get forward and score.
The pint-sized former Spanish youth international watched Marconi play Sydney United on Saturday night and said his move to Australia was about reigniting his career and proving himself.
"Here they have beautiful stadiums, great infrastructure, good fans and such an amazing country. I want to have an experience here and try to participate in the league," Manga told aufourfourtwo.com.
Informed that Sydney FC had lost their Slovakian midfielder Karol Kisel - a player similar in stature and style to Manga - and the Spaniard said he'd like to show the champions what he can do.
After playing for Barcelona B for four seasons at the turn of the new millennium, the player's career has remained in the Spanish second division. He's plied his trade at Cartagonova, Mataro, Gava and Girona where he made 31 appearances over the last two seasons.
Manga is being assisted in Sydney by former Spanish second division goalkeeper Jose Bello Amigo.
The 31-year-old Australian glovesman returned to Australia late last year after almost a decade in Spain and is currently the number two keeper and goalkeeper coach at Lee Sterrey's Marconi.
