The victory ensured the Tricolor's safe passage to the third round of World Cup qualifying in the CONCACAF zone and capped Ramirez's five-match spell in charge after the Mexican Football Federation (Femexfut) sacked Hugo Sanchez in March.

"I am very happy that we were able to clinch the goal (of qualification) and I am grateful to my players for their attitude and all that they gave me," Ramirez said.

"Now I wish much success to Eriksson and the good of our national team.

"I don't have too much to tell him (Eriksson) because he will have watched the team play on the field. The team have an excellent group of players."

Ramirez is set to remain with Femexfut and honour the remaining year on his contract despite speculation he would leave following Eriksson's appointment.

The coach indicated he would return to coaching Mexico's youth teams after leading the Under-17 team to the 2005 World Cup title.

"My contract runs to until 2009 and I have a lot to do in the youth sides so I'll be there," he said.

"Maybe I can listen to some offers I was made, but my priority is here."

Local reports have suggested Femexfut are set to announce Francisco Ramirez and Alberto Aguilar as Eriksson's assistants.

And Ramirez believes they would be perfect for the job, adding: "Both Paco (Ramirez) and Beto (Aguilar) are excellent friends of mine and they are able enough to do that job."
