SYDNEY FC youth supremo Steve O'Connor says the establishment of the club's elite academy is a massive boost in the quest to produce the Sky Blues stars of the future.
The Sydney FC Academy officially opened on Monday night when the first intake of 26 players gathered at Macquarie University.
The squad of players has been drawn from the NSW State League clubs and consists of junior players aged from 14-18.
The aim of the academy is to provide technical and tactical knowledge to produce better players and identify potential new talent that can represent Sydney FC in the National Youth League and Hyundai A League in future seasons.
Sydney FC Head of Youth Development Steve O'Connor will run the program and is looking forward to seeing the players improve, no matter what level they go on to reach.
"It's an exciting opportunity to further develop players in the Sydney metropolitan area and offers an elite academy pathway for young talented players to go on to play for Sydney FC," he said. "They will train at least once a week and hopefully three or four times a week once State League commitments are completed."
O'Connor is excited about the academy's establishment and its potential.
"Hopefully it will grow and develop," he said. "The possibilities and potential are extensive. We must thank the State League clubs for being so willing to be part of this program.
"Our promise to them is that the young players will be much improved due to their participation in the Sydney FC Academy program."
