Marquee man Robbie Fowler struck a hat-trick, the first time he has found the net in more than two months, as Perth Glory broke a 10-match winless run.

At Newcastle, the controversy surrounding parts of the pitch was quickly forgotten as the Jets finally recorded a win.

In the west, Glory finally put their fans out of their misery. After more than two months waiting for a win, Fowler delivered for the home fans against a sluggish Victory.

The fans will want more of the same from a team that has a huge gap between its best and worst.

In the Hunter Valley, the Jets played in front of an electric crowd and delivered. New recruit Francis Jeffers put in a whole-hearted appearance as the Jets upset the more fancied Adelaide United.

For all their efforts off field, Newcastle deserved some success on the park and it came.

Meanwhile the winning streaks of Brisbane Roar and Gold Coast United extended to unbeaten in 10.

But the Jets and Glory will be pleased they are, even if momentarily, back on track.

Gold Coast United 3 (Joel Porter 15’54’, Jason Culina 45’)
Sydney FC 1 (Bruno Cazarine 59’)
Crowd: 2536 @ Skilled Park

Sydney FC’s resurgence was cut short as Gold Coast United continued their fine form with a 3-1 home win.

United had scored only four goals in their previous six home games, but a double from Joel Porter and a long range effort from Jason Culina were too much for Sydney.

Recently re-signed Sydney keeper Ivan Necevski was at fault for the opener, with Porter beating him at his near post after a chipped pass from Culina.

Culina’s shot from distance found the bottom corner while Porter was given too much time and space to rocket a third into the top right of Necevski’s net.

Brazilian striker Bruno Cazarine pulled one back for the Sky Blues to take his tally to an impressive six. But after being unbeaten in their last three, Sydney fell to a team that has extended its unbeaten run to 10.

Man of the Match Gold Coast United’s Joel Porter had the quality to put away the chances his teammates created, including one spectacular strike from the edge of the area.

Key Moment Jason Culina’s goal right on halftime just about ensured the home side would collect the three points. Ratings by Matt Dorman.

Wellington Phoenix 0
Central Coast Mariners 3 (Joshua Rose 17’80’, Adam Kwasnik 86’)
Crowd: 5778 @ Westpac Stadium

Wellington have lost their invincibility at home, succumbing for the second time in a row at Westpac Stadium in a 3-0 loss to Central Coast.

Phoenix started brightly but were behind when Mariners left back Joshua Rose struck a bullet into the top corner of the net after a quarter of an hour.

He doubled his tally late on with a second right foot finish before Adam Kwasnik sealed the points with a third.

The Mariners have flown under the radar, sitting comfortably in third with games in hand on the top pair and young keeper Mathew Ryan kept another clean sheet, taking his tally to six from nine appearances for the club.

Man of the Match It’s difficult to go past Central Coast Mariners’ Josh Rose - two goals and a fantastic defensive performance from the left back.

Key Moment - The first goal from Josh Rose really knocked the wind out of Phoenix and, after that, very little constructive attacking play was seen from the Nix. Ratings by Arabella Vaughan.

Newcastle Jets 3 (Nikolai Topor-Stanley 5’, Marko Jesic 13’52’)
Adelaide United 1 (Iain Fyfe 79’)

EnergyAustralia Stadium was electric as Newcastle caused an upset with a 3-1 victory over Adelaide United.

Defender Nikolai Topor-Stanley broke his long drought without a goal to open the scoring before he assisted striker Marko Jesic to make it 2-0 after 13 minutes.

Recruit Francis Jeffers worked hard on debut and his pass set up Jesic to complete his brace. United defender Iain Fyfe got on the scoresheet yet again, taking his season tally to four.

The Jets had scored three goals in their previous five home games and despite parts of the surface, there was plenty to smile about for the home fans.

Adelaide have lost three of their last five after the high-flying start to the season.

Man of the match Newcastle Jets’ Marko Jesic finally managed to score for the Jets. It was these two quality goals that ensured his team gained a resounding victory over the second placed Adelaide.

Key Moment - Newcastle Jets’ second goal in the 13th minute meant it was pretty much game over. An Adelaide side down on confidence was unlikely to, and did not, come back after conceding two goals that early. AV

Perth Glory 3 (Robbie Fowler 13’54’61’)
Melbourne Victory 1 (Mate Dugandzic 80’)
Crowd: 6217 @ nib Stadium

A brilliant hat-trick from Robbie Fowler helped Perth Glory break a 10-game winless run with a 3-1 victory over Melbourne Victory.

Glory were the better side against a lacklustre Victory, with Fowler opening the scoring after Michael Petkovic parried his penalty.

He made it two and three with a couple of smart finishes before Melbourne substitute Mate Dugandzic scored a consolation goal.

It has been a long time coming from Glory and Fowler, with the striker suddenly moving to second on the goal scoring charts with five.

Victory coach Ernie Merrick would be unhappy with his team’s performance, making the clash with Central Coast all the more important on Thursday night.

Man of the Match - Don’t think anyone can really go past Robbie Fowler with this one after scoring his first hat-trick for Glory.

Key moment - The rather soft penalty given by Chris Beath for Rodrigo Vargas’s challenge on Robbie Fowler. Even though Petkovic managed to save Fowler’s initial penalty he was unable to keep it away from the advancing striker who opened the scoring. It was the start that Perth wanted and put the Melbourne Victory on the back foot early on at a ground which doesn’t hold too many fond memories for them. Ratings by Neil Zimmerman.

Melbourne Heart 1 (Gerald Sibon 11’)
Brisbane Roar 2 (Kosta Barbarouses 65’, Jean Carlos Solorzano 89’)
Crowd: 7034 @ AAMI Park

Brisbane Roar’s late show at AAMI Park was good enough to take home three points with a 2-1 defeat of Melbourne Heart.

Heart dominated the opening exchanges and were rewarded when Gerald Sibon volleyed home, although Roar keeper Michael Theoklitos would feel he should have done better with the effort.

Fellow Heart Dutchman Rutger Worm struck the woodwork with a superb header before Roar lifted for the second period.

They deservedly equalized thanks to yet another Kosta Barbarouses goal after a wall pass with Mitch Nichols before substitute Ivan Franjic had his penalty saved by Clint Bolton.

The winner would come with Jean Carlos Solorzano in the right spot at the right time, capitalizing on a rebound off the post to score a late winner.

It extends Roar’s unbeaten run to 10 while Heart’s six-game unbeaten run came to an end.

Key Moment – Ange Postecoglou’s halftime team-talk provided Brisbane with the wake-up call they badly needed. The Roar coach obviously gave his team a license to attack the game which resulted in their extraordinary turnaround. - MD
