The skipper is bound for Melbourne Heart next season but as he prepares to take his team to face basement boys Adelaide United this weekend, Thompson want to end this chapter of his career on a high note.

Supporters are often unforgiving when they discover a player signs for a rival A-League outfit but Thompson has no complaints on that front, heaping praise on the EnergyAustralia Stadium faithful.

He admits that show of support is helping to fuel his drive to end the season in positive fashion.

"The fans have been fantastic (since the news of the Melbourne Heart move) and that's something that means a lot to me. It really does," he told au.fourfourtwo.com today.

Saying you remain committed to your current club is one thing but Thompson hopes recent performances prove he is determined to walk the walk as well.

"We had a great result at Sydney last week. Personally it was great to be on the scoresheet but it was a great team effort," he said.

"I still have the remainder of this season with Newcastle Jets and that's what I'm focused on"

Friday's clash with Adelaide is a basement battle and Thompson has no desire to be dragged back into the A-League darkness.

"We want to avoid the wooden spoon, of course we do, but it isn't the height of our ambitions. Absolutely not," he said.

"A win or a couple of wins and you're up there challenging, it's that close. Adelaide are at home and they'll be looking to get a result in front of their fans. But we go there determined and want to open up a gap between us."

Friday's clash sees Thompson face fellow Heart recruit Kristian Sarkies but there will be no talk of what lies ahead.

He added: "It's about Newcastle and Adelaide, I'm sure that's what we're both looking at."
