EXCLUSIVE: More than 11,000 tickets have sold in just two days for December’s glamour clash between David Beckham’s LA Galaxy and Harry Kewell’s Victory in the AFL heartland Melbourne.
LA Galaxy President Tom Payne is due to visit Australia next week to cast an eye over preparations for the December 6 friendly between the MLS and A-League outfits.
And with the 11,000 tickets sold in just over 48 hours, the glamour clash appears certain to be a sell-out at Etihad stadium.
“There are some exciting announcements to follow shortly coupled with the visit next week from LA Galaxy President Tom Payne,” promised a spokesperson for the tour promoters Tribal Sports Management.
Aside from Kewell and Beckham there are some other big names to watch out for. Former Spurs and Ireland World Cup star Robbie Keane and US World Cup striker Landon Donovan are also expected to play.
And with LA currently top of the MLS Western Conference, Bruce Arena’s side are enjoying one of their best seasons.
“Victory are expecting their Chairman's Dinner to attract lots of interest given many members are choosing to have their Christmas parties at Etihad that night,” added the spokesperson.
"We’re very happy with ticket sales to date. All corporate suites have sold but there are still lots of dining packages available.”
The match will no doubt boost football massively in Victoria if Beckham’s previous two visits to Sydney and Newcastle are anything to go by.
And the game builds on the Kewell Mania that has gripped Victoria since the Socceroo’s arrival in the A-League.
After a rock-star reception at Melbourne Airport, more than 4000 fans turned up last weekend to see Kewell at an open training session with his Victory team-mates.
Kewell is set to play his first game for Victory on Friday night against the Reds in Adelaide. According to reports, the pre-season game will be a sell-out.
