EXCLUSIVE: Danny Tiatto bears no grudge against Ange Postecolglou for clearing him and other veterans out at Brisbane Roar two seasons ago - and says the coach did the right thing.
Postecoglou took over from former Socceroo coach Frank Farina in October 2009 and soon began implementing his vision and philosophy.
In doing this he shook up Roar’s roster, axing some high-profile veterans soon after his appointment. These included former Socceroo Craig Moore, Scottish great Charlie Miller and Tiatto – himself a former Socceroo and one-time EPL player with Manchester City.
It's been a stunning success with the underperforming club now generally regarded as one of the best - if not the best - club side in Australian history.
Two years after his axing Tiatto, now retired and living in Melbourne, said putting a broom through the club was the right thing to do and believes Roar are now setting a benchmark as a result.
“He’s come in and get rid of us old farts, people like myself, Charlie and Moorey” Tiatto told au.fourtwo.com.
“You could see what Ange was trying to do, he was trying to implement new ideas and that’s fair enough. It’s great for the game what he’s done.
“Roar have raised the level for everyone and hopefully it can continue. What he's done has been very impressive.”
Tiatto made around 50 appearances for Roar and famously scored a stunning long range rocket with his left peg against Perth Glory.
Tiatto, born in Werribee in Victoria, exited the game with little fanfare after the Roar chapter, playing briefly in the VPL before a short stint at his local club, Werribee City Bees.
As well as playing for the blue half of Manchester for a number of years, Tiatto enjoyed a long spell at Leicester City - where he was club captain - before returning home in 2007.
His last Socceroo appearances was in 2005.
There were no big goodbyes for Tiatto despite his long and illustrious career that included 23 caps for his nation and almost 250 appearances with UK clubs and Salernitana in Italy.
“I’m not the sort of person who likes a big swansong,” he explained. "I was just happy to keep a low profile and come back home.
"I’ve got two kids so they are my focus now and the house and I also like restoring old American cars."
However, there was a Roar reunion of sorts a few months ago when Tiatto convinced Moore to play with him at the Bees.
He added: “We were on holiday in Hawaii with our family and you know what it’s like, you have a few beers and before you know it I’d convinced Moorey to play a few games for Werribee with me and Joe Spitieri, another former Socceroo.
“Moorey’s a top bloke and it was good that he came down. We did okay and with all those Socceoroo caps it would’ve been embarrassing if we’d lost.
“But football is behind me these days. My family is the thing I’m concentrating on rather than football.”
Tiatto spoke to au.fourfourtwo.com for the upcoming Melbourne Victory versus LA Galaxy match day programme where he recounted playing in the Manchester derbies against David Beckham.
