KAZ Patafta's Newcastle Jets future is hanging in the balance with Gary van Egmond unsure whether to offer the youngster a new contract.
Patafta was utilised in a wide right role on Tuesday as the Jets took on F3 rivals Central Coast Mariners in a trial match - a warm up ahead of Asian Champions League commitments next week.
The Jets saw off their rivals 2-1 in the match (having also won a trial match against their rivals a few weeks ago) but van Egmond was not convinced Patafta is the answer on the flank.
Van Egmond told AAP: "We looked at him in a wide position and it didn't work with or without the ball. It's not saying that Kaz is a poor player he just doesn't fit the style we are looking at at the moment.
"At the moment it is touch and go as to whether we keep him on. Kaz has shown some good flashes but he is a bit of an enigma and from a coach's point of view, I need someone consistent to rely on."
The Jets face Nagoya Grampus next Wednesday while the Mariners next test is the return against Kawasaki Frontale.
