Having had the bye in the season's opening week, the young Reds outfit for 2010/11 are keen to kick start their season off in style against one of last season's National Youth League grand finalists.

With eight new faces in the squad from last year and the playing group having spent less than week training altogether, United Youth Coach Joe Mullen has had little time to work with his group, however he firmly believes his players will put on a good first up showing.

"We're going into an unknown, we've got largely a new team and a new squad, and Perth may very well have similar," Mullen said.

"I know Perth have been together now for the last three months, in fact they had a tour of China together as well, so their preparation has been good, however I'm confident we can do well."

Facing one of the leading teams from last year in their opening game of the season, Mullen says there is no better way for his new players to be introduced to the National Youth League.

"Last year when Perth made the grand final they showed they are a good side and are very well coached, so we know it's going to be a difficult game for us, but one I know I'm looking forward to immensely and I'm sure the players are as well," Mullen said.

Due to players having commitments with local clubs, Mullen has yet to see his full squad play a competitive match together. But despite the little time to gel, Mullen is confident the players will cope with the rapid learning curve.

"Last Friday we played but there were five boys involved in local grand finals so we haven't had a match together unfortunately this year, but the majority of the squad played against an African team last week and we've had a little training match against the SASI group, but Friday is really our first time all together," Mullen said.

"It's like anything, they'll learn as they go and they'll adapt, and the good players will adapt well and go to another level as a result. It's all part of the make up of becoming a professional footballer."

The Reds' Youth Team is expected to have the benefit of a number of senior players, Reds Head Coach Rini Coolen stating that midfielder Fabian Barbiero will have a run in the Youth game, while a former product of United's Youth Team, Joe Costa, could also play.

Kick-Off is at 4.45pm (ACST) with gates open at 4.30pm.
