Although both sides made several changes to their squads over the winter break, Glory came into this match without a strike force as Jamie Harnwell (shoulder) and Eugene Dadi (hamstring) were sidelined with injury, while Nikita Rukavytsya joined the Olympic squad.

But Mitchell said his undermanned side withstood the Jets early pressure despite several team members playing out of position.

And the coach reserved special praise for Argentinean signing Adrian Trinidad, who earned his side an 11th minute penalty that he confidently fired past Ante Covic.

"We haven't been together as that team, this was the first time we saw (these) players playing out of position," said Mitchell after the game, played on a sunny but brisk afternoon at Mandurah's Hyundai Stadium.

"We couldn't get a touch the first 15 minutes and when we did, we started to get the ball a little bit and be bit more creative, a bit more danger and we got the goal from a good bit of football."

"Trinidad got the ball and took the players on which is his forte, (he) got the penalty and we scored and that really settled us down I think."

Mitchell said Trinidad, who was signed from Malaysian side KL Plus in June, would only improve with more games under his belt.

"He's not fully match fit and I'm being a bit cautious about how long I keep him on the park," Mitchell said.

"I initially thought 45 minutes, but I asked him at half time if he's ok, we didn't have much depth on the bench so if I can get another 15, 20 minutes out of him, it would be great for his fitness."

Despite the early goal, Jets drew level in the 36th minute when Noel Spencer pounced on the loose ball at the far post after a corner skimmed off Dino Djulbic's head, firing in a low shot.

Mitchell, however, was impressed that his players didn't drop their heads and addressed any first-half deficiencies from then on as Glory gradually gained more possession during the second half, setting up a series of chances.

"Half time I said to them, 'Guys, they haven't really bothered us much but in essence, we've been running around chasing after the ball, we haven't had the ball much and every time we do get it we were giving it away too easily'," said Mitchell.

"Certain players weren't doing their jobs and didn't understand what they had to do and we sort of enforced that at half time what they had to do and second half it was probably better ... a good run out for us," he said.
