HOME-GROWN star Jamie Coyne and Englishman James Robinson have signed new deals to stay with Perth Glory.
Robinson will extend his stay in Perth for a further year while Coyne’s new agreement will take him through the next two campaigns.
Coyne enjoyed a breakout season in which he was handed the responsibility of a number of roles in Glory’s defence while he also ventured into midfield at times.
His versatility caught the eye of a number of clubs around the country that pursued his signature. But his loyalty to Perth and belief in coach Dave Mitchell’s plans ensured he will add to the 89 games already played with the WA outfit.
“Jamie has had an outstanding season and it was important that we retained him for a variety of reasons,” Mitchell said.
“He is obviously a quality player and will be a key ingredient for us moving forward however his signature also sends a clear message that Perth is a great place to play football and the Glory is on the way up."
He added: “Both Jamie Coyne and Jamie Harnwell, who signed with us late last week, could have been tempted by bigger dollars but they have shown a terrific allegiance to the club.
"They want to be part of a successful Perth Glory side and with their contributions I’m sure we’ll make a good fist of it and take this club back to the top.”
Coyne joined Perth in 2002 and was part of the club’s 2003/04 NSL Championship side. He has had stints in England and Holland and more recently was invited to the Socceroos training camps under new national coach Pim Verbeek.
“There is no doubt Jamie stepped up last season and definitely proved to the league that he’d be a valuable addition to any side," said Mitchell.
"He reads the game well, is competitive and has been around the club for a while, so I’ll be looking to him to take on more of a guiding role next season.”
Meantime James Robinson will also be hoping to continue his improvement after impressing coaching staff and Glory fans with his tenacity and work rate in 18 games for the club last season.
Robinson joined Perth in 2007/08 after a spell with Melbourne Victory and scored two goals in his debut season in the west. His determination and positive attitude have proved infectious at the club and Robinson has quickly become a much admired member of the squad.
“He works his socks off and probably doesn’t always get the plaudits he deserves because he isn’t always doing the flashy stuff, but we know the amount of work he is putting in and I was keen to have him back on board this season,” Mitchell said.
“Robbo has a lot of character and is a great player to have in and around the dressing rooms. If you couple that with his football ability then you have an excellent package and it’ll be great to have him around the club going forward.”
Perth Glory now have eleven (11) contracted players for the 2008/09 season and are working to secure the services of more talented players in the weeks to come.
Mitchell added: “The players we have ready to go for next season are focussed on getting the club back into the top four and, I believe, will provide the driving force to help ensure the club is once again a feared opponent across the league.
“We still have plenty of work to do but things are progressing well and I think the calibre of players we have retained proves that there is a very positive feeling about what we’re setting out to achieve.”
