EXCLUSIVE: Tyler Simpson is poised to agree a new contract with Perth Glory and predicts ‘a very different’ campaign to unfold on the west coast next season.
The versatile 22-year-old made nine starts last year after being brought in by then coach Ron Smith as an injury replacement for David Tarka.
Brother Jordan also arrived at Members Equity Stadium as the men in purple battled to avoid the A-League’s wooden spoon. This they did by their skin of their teeth, edging out the Wellington Phoenix on goal difference.
Tyler believes there is renewed hope under coach Dave Mitchell and he is hoping to be part of his plans for 2008/9.
He told au.fourfourtwo.com: “I’m still in talks with Perth and hopefully that will be finalised in the next week or so.
“I think it will be a lot different at Perth this time round. Dave (Mitchell) has come in, he’s had time to prepare the way he wants to and to get the players that he wants.
“Dave just brought ‘something’ to the place when he took over from Ron Smith although it’s really difficult to say exactly what I mean by that. He changed a few things, shook things up and this time we’ll definitely be aiming for the top four.”
To keep himself ticking over Tyler (along with Jordan) is turning out for New South Wales Premier League outfit Blacktown City Demons.
He said: “There’s a lot of quality players in this league and it’s a good place for young players to mix it with older, more experienced players. A fair amount of those older players have been in the A-League last year.
“It’s good to come back, keep up your match fitness but at the same time offer something to the club. I came through the Blacktown City youth system myself and it was good for me.”
Blacktown may be a world away from the international stage but Simpson looks at the A-League squad bound for Singapore and feels there is still an opportunity for him.
He said: “You look at that squad and there’s a lot of young players from the A-League.
"It’s good that Pim Verbeek’s come in and he’s trying to give everyone a go. Sooner or later if you’re playing well enough you’ll get your opportunity. So that’s positive from my point of view.”
