“I want to thank everyone who came along to the game on Saturday night and made it such an enjoyable evening,” Palmer said.

“A very big thank you goes to everyone who donated money or toys for our toy appeal, which was incredibly successful.

“All these toys will go to flood victims in the Lockyer Valley this week and I’m happy that the club has been able to play a positive role in alleviating some of the pain and suffering that people have had to go through during this crisis, especially children."

He added: “I’m pleased that Saturday’s flood relief appeal game has allowed the club, with the money raised and the toys collected, to be proactive in the community and truly identify with the needs of people at a time of crisis.

“I hope that through fundraising other clubs and codes will also provide ongoing relief and financial support to those who need it.”

A team of volunteers at Gold Coast United’s HQ were today sifting and sorting through the countless boxes of toys and gifts, placing them into age groups in preparation for the big giveaway on Thursday when the entire squad will be on hand to spread a few smiles.

Coordinator of the appeal, Joe Webb, who manned the donation van outside Skilled Park, said he was overwhelmed by the generosity of the community.

“The toys just kept coming and coming and we filled the truck completely before we left,” he said.

“Everything will go to children who have been left without any toys after the flood disaster and it’s so heart-warming to see how the community comes together at a time like this. The club is pleased and proud to play a role in this but the most important thing is to help those who really need it.

“We’ve been sorting through the toys all morning and it will be tomorrow morning before we finish. There has to be well over 2000 items here.”
