Mrdja, 31, will join his new teammates for the first time tonight and could make his debut for the club against Fury after marquee striker Archie Thompson was yesterday ruled out for four weeks with a foot injury and fellow forward Robbie Kruse continues to manage a shoulder injury.

Mrdja, who netted 12 goals in 42 appearances for Central Coast and has one Qantas Socceroos cap to his name, has been signed until August this year and will feature in the Hyundai A-League 2010 Finals Series and the AFC Champions League 2010.

Meanwhile Central Coast Mariners confirmed Mrdja had re-signed with them for another year...starting after his spell at Victory is over.

"This is a great opportunity for Nik to join us for the last two rounds of the Hyundai A-League season, the Finals Series and the ACL," Melbourne Victory Football Operations Manager Gary Cole said.

"While we think this is the deepest squad that we've ever had with great youth and experience, having another striking option is fantastic and gives us a really nice balance.

"The news we had yesterday about Archie was a concern and with Robbie's shoulder also a concern, we moved to sign Nik, who is big, tall, strong and quick and in very good form at the moment, having scored six goals this season.

"Nik will fly into Melbourne today and because of circumstance should find himself at least on the bench tonight against North Queensland."

Mrdja, who made his international debut for Australia in a friendly against Argentina at the MCG in 2007, joined Central Coast from Sweden's AIK Solna in 2005 and has made 17 appearances this season.

Mariners Executive chairman Lyall Gorman paid tribute to Mrdja as he announced the striker's new one year deal at Bluetongue.

"Nik has been in some terrific form for us over the past few rounds, and heading to Melbourne will help him gain valuable match fitness over the coming months, before he returns to us to begin the new campaign," he said.

And Mrdja addded: "I have been really happy with the way I have playing, but as a footballer you always want to be at the top of your game, and getting regular game time over the next few months will help me get to where I want to be.

"The last Asian Champions League campaign was a great experience and I can't wait to be a part of it again, while at the same time, I'm keen to continue what I have started here at the Mariners."

  • Melbourne Victory also confirmed they have reached a mutual agreement to part ways with defender Steven Pace, who was originally contracted until March 31, but has been granted an early release.

Pace, 26, joined Melbourne Victory from Victorian Premier League side Preston Lions in 2007 as an injury replacement player and earned a permanent contract soon after following several impressive performances towards the end of 2007/08.
