Goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic, defender Robert Cornthwaite and versatile defender/midfielders Scott Jamieson and Paul Reid were all included in Verbeek’s squad, the national coach having narrowed down his initial list of 35 players over the weekend.

The four did enough in The Reds’ draw with the Central Coast Mariners last Friday night to convince Verbeek that they deserved a place in the squad, Verbeek also signalling since he took over the top job that he favoured players who had experience playing against overseas teams, particularly in Asia.

Galekovic beat Newcastle Jets goalkeeper Ante Covic for the third keeping spot, the former Olyroos and Melbourne Victory keeper rewarded for his outstanding form for United in both the Hyundai A-League and AFC Champions League.

The selection of Adelaide United’s two former England based players Reid and Jamieson into the Qantas Socceroos squad has also demonstrated that players returning to play in the Hyundai A-League can be noticed for consideration in the national side.

United coach Vidmar said: “They were really pleased to be able to come back and play at this level, especially Scott Jamieson who didn’t have too much first team football in England so he’s done remarkably well in a short space of time.

“Their form has been tremendous.”

Reid said he was delighted to be considered amongst Australia’s top players after being in the outer during his time in England with Brighton & Hove Albion.

“To be rewarded with this so early after coming back to the Hyundai A-League I’m very happy about it,” Reid said.
