AURELIO Vidmar will field his strongest possible side for Friday night's clash with Queensland Roar despite next week's ACL semi-final second leg looming large.
The Reds head to Suncorp Stadium for the second time this season, hoping to continue their unbeaten record at the ground and maintain their place in the top four of the A-League.
United are undefeated at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium (two wins, three draws) in five outings in the A-League and another positive result tomorrow night would provide the ideal tonic ahead of the squad’s long trip to Uzbekistan to face Bunyodkor in the 2nd leg of the AFC Champions League Semi Finals.
Despite being outplayed back in round two, The Reds managed to hold onto a 1-1 result but Vidmar says his team will need an improved showing to challenge Frank Farina’s outfit.
He said: “We got a 1-1 result but it was done the hard way, we gave them a little too much room last time and they have got a great midfield.
“They’re extremely mobile so if we keep everything tight and everyone does their job, we shouldn’t have too many problems.”
United centre back Sasa Ognenovski, who spent two seasons at Roar before moving to Adelaide, echoed Vidmar’s thoughts, identifying the importance of stopping Queensland’s midfield brigade.
He said: “I think we’ve just got to put them under pressure. Playing there (at Queensland) last year I know a lot of clubs didn’t like playing us because of the style of game we played where we just ran relentlessly, so I think we’ve got to put them under the same pressure, especially in the midfield and not give their ball users any time or space."
The Reds’ front line will be looking to put pressure on a Queensland Roar defence led by Craig Moore, who is expected to back up after playing for the Qantas Socceroos last night.
Having spent the past week in Brisbane with the national team, The Reds’ four Qantas Socceroos squad members Robert Cornthwaite, Eugene Galekovic, Scott Jamieson and Paul Reid would be well acclimatised to the conditions and Vidmar expects to have all four ready to go against the Roar.
One player Vidmar will not have is midfielder Diego, the coach opting to rest the Brazilian playmaker tomorrow night, after he fell ill early in the week. Despite following up with the match in Tashkent five days later, Vidmar says he will be putting his best possible line up on the park against Queensland as the club aims to secure three points.
The coach said: “We’re trying to field the strongest possible side for tomorrow night and get the three points because it is still extremely important what we’re doing in the A-League. Whatever happens after Friday night’s game, we’ll assess it on Saturday morning."
The Adelaide United and Queensland Roar Youth teams will also meet tomorrow night in Round 4 of the National Youth League, the match to be played as a curtain raiser to the Hyundai A-League encounter.
