QUEENSLAND Roar youth coach Rado Vidosic is confident of an entertaining performance and a positive result on Sunday when his youngsters take on the Newcastle Jets at Perry Park.
With little known about his opponents, Vidosic said he would encourage his players to concentrate on their own performances, mixing discipline with youthful exuberance.
He said: “We are always trying to play entertaining football.
“Those are the games where I would encourage players to make mistakes, to try different things, to try to take people on and try to express themselves and build up their confidence.
“The result is not number one, if you make some mistakes it doesn’t really matter as long as you can learn something from them.”
Following a win in Melbourne in round one, Roar Youth fell to a 2-1 defeat in Sydney on Saturday after taking the lead through Josh McVey.
Vidosic said his travelling team’s tired legs played a role in the defeat and he was looking to improve fitness for the upcoming rounds.
He said: “We played reasonably well for the first 70 minutes and then we just ran out of legs.
“This time around we’ve had four hard training sessions leading into the game so again we’re looking at fitness of some of the boys and also to back up and perform reasonably well of course.”
This weekend’s FIFA break gives Vidosic plenty of first-team players to choose from, with half of his provisional 16-man squad made up of senior players.
“I think that was the whole idea, to get players that are coming back from injuries or didn’t have as much game time as the others (to build) match fitness.
“At the moment we’re looking at maybe six or seven (first-team) players that are going to be performing and playing on Sunday.”
Vidosic said he was looking to senior players Chris Grossman, David Dodd and captain Adam Sarota to control the midfield against the Jets, but pointed to goal-a-game Josh McVey as a potent attacking weapon.
“I think he’s full of confidence; he’s just that kind of guy. He was scoring goals for fun in the (Queensland State League).
“He’s got a beautiful shot and he’s not shy of using it so I can just see better things from him.”
Queensland Roar Youth take on the Newcastle Jets at 3pm, Sunday at Perry Park, Abbotsford Road, Bowen Hills.
