Saturday's triumph over the Gold Coast meant the reigning champions won back-to-back matches for the first time this season to move into ninth, six points outside the top six with six games to play.

It was also the first time Sydney has ever beaten Gold Coast United.

"We played them three times last season and didn't win, then this season twice and the same, but tonight it changed," Lavicka said.

"Everyone is happy; the boys worked very hard and deserved a good result. We have two victories in a row so the confidence is coming back.

"The season is still going and if there is a chance mathematically to play in the finals series we will fight until the last moment."

Youngster Dimitri Petratos scored the opening goal of the win and Lavicka praised the 18-year-old midfielder.

"He scored a spectacular goal, and did a very good performance," he said.

New Finnish signing Juho Makela scored Sydney's second goal on his home debut and he revealed his delight after the game.

"It's always a fantastic feeling to score, especially today being my first home game here in Sydney," Makela said,

"I missed the first cross from Scott Jamieson and didn't score from that, but I got another chance from Sebastian Ryall and I'm very happy.

"I hope to start playing in the starting line-up, it means a lot to me."

Sydney FC's next match is at home to Melbourne Victory on Saturday.
