However, for Richie Cardozo (pictured), the VPL Golden Boot and Media VPL Player of the Year, he is facing an uncertain future now that his VPL season has finished.
Cardozo’s Hume City were knocked out of the VPL finals en-route to AAMI Park. And with no Mirabella Cup final to look forward to, like many players with ambitions to play at a higher level, it means a nervous wait and hope that there is a chance in the A-League
“To be completely honest I’m not too sure at the moment,” Cardozo told au.fourfourtwo.com when quizzed on his future.
“It’s hard to say. I’m a free agent at the moment so I want to keep my options open and something comes of it in the A-League or overseas.
“And if not I’ll try to do my best to go back to back with another award like this next year.
“We have to wait and see. Hopefully something comes of it and I’ve done enough to maybe get a look in somewhere. It’s out of my hands, I’ve done everything I can now.”
For other players, though, last week’s VPL grand final between Oakleigh and Green Gully was an ideal showcase. Ricky Diaco, James Robinson and Hayden Doyle were all dangerous for the Cannons.
And Gully’s Stephen Downes and keeper Nicola Roganovic – a recent trialist at Melbourne Heart – also caught the eye.
Added Cardozo: “On a personal note it’s been a fantastic season. But as a team I’m still heart-broken that we missed out on the finals though.”
Tomorrow night the Mirabella Cup’s semi finals are between Northcote City and Green Gully and Oakleigh Cannons and Melbourne Knights.
Green Gully were crowned championship winners last Saturday following their thrilling 3-2 win over Oakleigh, and Ian Dobson’s men will be going for a triple trophy haul after also taking out the minor premiership. It could be a very busy week for Gully.
The Mirabella Cup on Saturday will kick off with a curtain raiser featuring the two top performing regional teams, Cobram Victory and Ballarat Red Devils, playing for the Mirabella Regional Challenge Trophy.
Mirabella’s marketing and sales manager Joe Mirabella was excited to throw the company’s support behind the additional trophy, giving the two regional standouts in the knockout phase the chance to meet on the big stage of AAMI Park.
“It’s been terrific to support Victorian football through the Mirabella Cup, and see such great football being played in the build up to this week’s semi finals and Grand Final,” he said.
"We couldn’t be happier to be involved in the biggest knockout Cup competition in Australia."
The curtain raiser will kick off at 1pm on Saturday with Gate 7 at AAMI Park open from 12.30pm. The Mirabella Cup final will kick off at 4pm.
