EXCLUSIVE: Central Coast Mariners skipper Alex Wilkinson has described his side's woeful defensive record over the last two games as “freaky”.
“I don't think it's anything to do with the break, I think it's more to do with us making some silly team and individual errors.
“A few goals have come from set-pieces so it's important that we keep switched on, especially when the ball is out of play. Those set-pieces can decide a game,” he told au.fourfourtwo.com today.
The Mariners head west to play Glory on Sunday hopeful their defensive malaise wont' be exploited by a Glory side which has proved dangerous at set-pieces this season.
And with nothing to lose, Glory will be a tricky opponent for a side desperate to regain top spot on the ladder.
“Obviously ten goals in two games at home isn't good enough, but we've worked on some things this week,” Wilkinson said of the 5-4 and 5-2 losses to Sydney and Victory respectively.
“Before those two games we were the best defensive team in the league, so we can do better.
“We used to be able to take a lead and grind out a result and keep the other teams scoreless.
“It may just be two freaky games where you concede ten goals. Hopefully we can get back to where we were before.”
Mariners have bolstered their defence with the short term signing of former Sydney fullback Alvin Ceccoli to replace Dean Heffernan at left back who is out for the rest of the season with a broken tibia.
