In no particular order ...

Yuning Zhang
Club: Queensland Roar

Granted, he had a bit of skill about him, but if you've ever wondered why China can't seem to make any headway in international footy, "The Beckham of Chinese Football" was a perfect example of their malaise. Lazy, unfit (pack a day didn't help) and lacking in desire and workrate, Zhang flounced around the Roar allegedly attracting young Chinese female fans to Suncorp. Around 50 turned up – and some would've been more use than the Chinese chump. He promptly pissed coach Bleiberg off by flying back to China mid-season for a tabloid crazy wedding. Was soon back in China permanently.

Where is he now? Liaoning FC.

Steve McMahon Jnr
Club: Perth Glory

Only his old man, Glory manager Steve McMahon, could see what this ex Blackpool and Kidderminster "ace" could bring to Perth. The press soon twigged and the Scouse hardman had to beg the journos to take it easy on "our kid". As one insider noted, young Macca was barely WA state league level. After just six forgettable games in the purple, we'd agree.

Where is he now? Retired, we believe.

Claudinho
Club: Melbourne Victory

Scored early in his stint with Merrick's boys but being overweight, lazy and falling over a lot went against the Brazilian powder puff. Merrick soon realised Claude was awful and four games into his stint, he was quietly told to train over there away from the rest of the group. A few days after Victory were crowned champions of Australia, the striker was on a plane back to Brazil.

Where is he now? Club Esporto Santo Andre.

Alex Salazar
Club: Sydney FC

Made history for being the first official signing for Sydney FC back in 2005. Apparently a grainy DVD of the American playing college football made him look A-League talent. He wasn't. Littbarski saw him in person, realized he was not up to it and the young Yankee – son of marathon runner Alberto Salazar – was consigned to training duties only. Couldn't play. But he could run.

Where is he now? Unknown.

Marcus Wedau
Club: Queensland Roar

It was said the laidback German was an U/21 international colleague of Michael Ballack. That was true – however, Marcus was bollocks. A would be midfield general, he was never fit enough to play that role in the A-League's most fit team. His Swedish girlfriend was fit though. Some say the slightly built Wedau simply under-estimated A-League intensity. One of the most "Un-German" midfielders we've ever seen.

Where is he now?
KFC Uerdingen, we believe

Matt Carbon
Club: New Zealand Knights

Arguably the signing that broke the camel's back in soulless Auckland. A franchise with an image problem thought importing a 30-something, unknown English defender would have the fans flocking to North Albany. Clueless manager Paul Nevin departed shortly after Carbon touched down. He didn't play a game, was injured mostly and the club imploded shortly after. He quietly left town.

Where is he now?
Milton Keynes Dons was his last club.

Mario Jardel
Club: Newcastle Jets

Blubbered up former great whose years of drug abuse finally took its toll as the Brazilia lumbered manfully across the Jets' forward line in a XXXXL shirt. In 11 cringeworthy appearances he never looked like scoring even though in his prime, he was a goal machine at the highest level. Sad, really.

Where is he now? Criciuma Esporte Club.

Jorge Drovandi
Club: Newcastle Jets

"La Bala" or "The Bullet" was touted as another Nicky Carle – a tricky Argentine winger and an excitement machine, gushed Gary Van Egmond. After one forgettable display in Perth, Gaz soon realised not all Argies are great players and he'd been sold a dud by a chortling agent somewhere in Buenos Aires. Jorge was soon given the bullet for being permanently out of form.

Where is he now? Club Atletico Aldovis.

Ben Collett
Club: New Zealand Knights

Hard to believe baby-faced Ben was on the cusp of breaking into the Man Utd first team squad a few years earlier. By the time he arrived at the crappiest A-League franchise in history, Collett was a shadow of his former self. Added nothing to a side that was a nothing side, his career downunder was nothing but a forgettable episode.

Where is he now? The recipient of a massive compensation payout which reaped bony Ben a fortune. May be also playing in the lower leagues in Holland.

Brian Deane
Club: Perth Glory

Big Brian made history being the first ever scorer in the EPL. He also made history for being one of Perth's most ill-conceived signings. At 37, the pace of the A-League was clearly too much for the aging Sheff Utd hero. An embarrassing episode was ended mid-season when the big man and Glory parted company after seven games and one goal.

Where is he now? Retired.
