Confidence is one thing, but Caravella insists there will be no complacency when Gold Coast play at home for the first time in four weeks on Friday when Sydney FC visit Skilled Park.

“It’s a massive psychological boost for us to get that result in Melbourne. Three points anywhere is a good three points, but to go to Etihad Stadium and get them has given us a lot of confidence,” said Caravella.

“Having won in Melbourne we have to go on with it now and capitalise with a home win this weekend against Sydney.

"Everyone is on a high at the moment and we’ll be confident that we can get three more points on Friday night, but we’ll have to be careful because Sydney are a very useful side and they are starting to get it together a bit now.”

A resolute display proved effective  for Gold Coast as they nullified Victory’s somewhat narrow attack, but Caravella bristled at recent suggestions that United’s performance at Etihad Stadium was a defensive one and gave an insight into what the players had worked on all week before flying down to Melbourne.

“Everything we did in the Melbourne game was calculated and everyone did their jobs brilliantly," he said.

"Different people see the game differently, so if some people think it was a defensive approach then so be it. In our minds, we went out there to win the game. That was our plan from the very start of the week,” he said.

“In the past we’ve played a pressure game high up the park and it’s exposed us when we’ve lost the ball. We let Melbourne come a bit closer to us this time before we put pressure on the ball and when they coughed it up we went on the break. We managed to get forward on the break a lot and eventually we scored from it.

“Everyone on the pitch worked really hard to get that result and there was nothing left in the tank afterwards. We all put a good shift in. Young Ben Halloran did really well in his first start and he was a good outlet for us. It was a big stage for him to make an impression and he certainly did himself justice.

“We’re ticking along nicely and picking up points, so we’re quietly happy with what we’re doing and how we are positioned. Consistency is everything in football and we have that at the moment.”

The win kept Gold Coast in fourth position on the A-League table, level on points with third-placed Central Coast Mariners, and United still have games in hand over both Brisbane Roar and Adelaide United, who occupy the top two spots.
