EXCLUSIVE: Frank Farina wants young guns Robbie Kruse and Michael Zullo to step up a gear this season after warning one swallow doesn't make a summer.
The Queensland Roar coach is a big believer in youth development and the introduction of Kruse and Zullo to the senior stage was one of the highlights of last season.
Farina, who has recruited further Queensland talent during the close season, wants the duo to be recognised for consistent contributions this time round.
The so-called second season syndrome has proved a big obstacle to some youngsters over the years but Farina is confident the duo have what it takes to avoid that.
He told au.fourfourtwo.com: "Consistency’s pretty much the key word that I’ve been putting to them.
"They both arrived with a bang last season but as I keep telling them, one swallow doesn’t make a summer. They’re aware there’ll be expectation out there but that’s life and you have to be able to deal with it."
Farina hopes all his local recruits can progress this year and feels being happy and content off the pitch is a big factor for them.
He said: "You tend to find you get the best out of players who are comfortable in their surroundings.
"I recently signed a 16-year-old on an A-League contract and two (Queensland)lads from the AIS. They’re coming home and if they’re comfoertable with their surroundings then nine times out of 10 they’ll be comfortable with their football, enjoy their football and improve."
