BAKU, July 16 (Sputnik) - Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev congratulated Monday his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin and all Russians on successfully hosting the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
"Dear Vladimir Vladimirovich, I warmly congratulate you and all Russian people on successfully hosting the 21st FIFA World Cup. The World Cup became a truly unforgettable festival for all the supporters of this most popular sport, for millions of fans," Aliyev said in letter as quoted by his press service.
According to the Azerbaijani president, this summer's tournament will go down in history as "an example of perfect organization, preparation and hosting of this kind of events."
Russia's first-ever FIFA World Cup kicked off on June 14 and came to a close on Sunday with 64 games played in 11 cities across the country. France beat Croatia 4-2 in the final at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium to secure their second World Cup title.
