With the match finishing 1-1 after 120 minutes, Tottenham midfielder Eric Dier struck the decisive spot-kick for the Three Lions to set up a tie against Sweden in Samara on Sunday morning (AEST).

After goalless first half, American referee Mark Geiger penalised Colombia midfielder Carlos Sanchez for hauling down England captain Harry Kane, who converted the resulting penalty (59).

The decision was furiously contested by Colombia, and intensified what was already a heated battle.

With seconds left in stoppage time, Colombia defender Yerri Mina scored an equaliser with a towering header from a corner (90+3) to set up extra time.

With neither side able to force a winner, the match went to penalties.

During the shootout, England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford saved from AC Milan forward Carlos Bacca before Dier stepped up to clinch victory, driving his shot low under David Ospina.
