MOSCOW, July 5 (Sputnik) - Governor of the Bank of England Mark Carney said on Thursday that England's triumph at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia would be an "absolute good" for the UK economy.
"It would be an unalloyed, unadulterated, absolute good," Carney said as quoted by the UK TV channel Sky News.
According to Sky News, industry data analysts Kantar Worldpanel predicted a 5 percent rise in grocery sales and a 1.4 million extra trips to the shops ahead of the FIFA World Cup quarter-final between England and Sweden on Saturday, while sales of alcohol predicted to rise by a quarter.
Carney added that England's games at this summer's tournament were "a pleasure to watch."
Gareth Southgate's squad finished second in Group G after beating Tunisia 2-1 and thrashing Panama 6-1 to record their biggest World Cup win ever. They went on to lose 1-0 to Belgium before edging out Colombia 4-3 on penalties in the last 16.
The Three Lions will next face Sweden in the quarter-finals in Samara on Saturday.
The 2018 FIFA World Cup kicked off on June 14 and will continue until July 15, with the matches being played in 11 cities across Russia.
