ROSTOV-ON-DON, June 7 (Sputnik) - A volunteer center for the upcoming 2018 FIFA World Cup has opened at the Rostov Arena in the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don, which will host five matches of this summer's tournament, the region's government said Thursday.
"Following the selection process, 1,321 people have become volunteers for the Russia 2018 Local Organizing Committee while 1,400 more became part of the city volunteers' team," the government said in a statement.
According to the statement, 95 percent of Rostov-on-Don's volunteers are from Russia while 5 percent hail from abroad, with one of them coming from Australia's biggest city, Sydney, which is 8855 miles away from Rostov-on-Don.
The 2018 FIFA World Cup will be held between June 14 and July 15 at 12 stadiums across 11 Russian cities. The 45,000-seater Rostov Arena will host four group-stage matches and one Round of 16 fixture.
