Russian Sports Minister Pavel Kolobkov told Sputnik on Sunday that France "showed a perfect football" and had "deservedly" won the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
France won the 2018 FIFA World Cup after beating Croatia 4-2 in the final at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium on Sunday.
"I congratulate the World Cup winners! France have showed a perfect football and have deservedly won the World Cup. I'm also happy for Russia who showed their best result in the modern history of the Russian football, as they became one of the eight best teams of the tournament and were... close to advancing further," Kolobkov said.
Playing on their home turf, the Russian national team achieved their best result at a FIFA World Cup since the break-up of the Soviet Union in 1991, going as far as the quarter-finals, where they lost to Croatia on penalties.
"We'll have to sum up the World Cup in Russia. But already now there is enough positive feedback from players, experts and, of course, fans in order to call the organization of the tournament a success. Russia managed... to show... hospitality, cordiality and kindness, to create a bright sports festival that will leave ever-lasting warm memories in the hearts of the Russian people and the guests of our country," Kolobkov said.
