KAZAN, July 7 (Sputnik) - Belgium head coach Roberto Martinez said on Friday night that in order to defeat five-time World Champions Brazil his team had to be brave and also believe in taking a chance and changing things tactically.
Belgium beat five-time champions Brazil 2-1 in Kazan on Friday to qualify for the World Cup semi-finals, where they will face the 1998 winners France at St. Petersburg Stadium on Tuesday.
“I think when you play Brazil you need to get a tactical advantage… Brazil, they bring that psychological barrier. When you play Brazil, you play against yellow tops that have won five World Cups. And we had to be tactically brave, and it was a big gamble, because to change things tactically at the World Cup means players have to believe [in it],” Martinez told journalists.
He added that his players were “the bravest men on earth” and believed in “taking a risk” when playing against such a strong opponent.
This is Belgium’s 12th appearance at the World Cup, with their best performance being the fourth place they achieved in Mexico in 1986.
The 2018 FIFA World Cup kicked off on June 14 and will continue until July 15, with the matches being played in 11 cities across Russia.
