MOSCOW, June 29 (Sputnik) - The chairman of the Local Organizing Committee for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Arkady Dvorkovich told Sputnik on Friday that he hoped that German football fans would stay in Russia until the end of the tournament despite their side crashing out.
The 2014 world champions crashed out of the World Cup after losing 2-0 to South Korea on Wednesday. Germany have failed to advance from the group stage for the first time in history.
"There are some unexpected results. Fans of the German team are, of course, very much disappointed... I hope they will stay for the next matches. Of course, I support the Russian team and hope that they will go as far as they can," Dvorkovich said.
He added that he liked the way Brazil, Croatia and Belgium played.
"Brazil, Croatia and Belgium are showing a nice performance. In yesterday's match, which meant nothing in terms of the tournament bracket [as they have already qualified for the round of 16], Belgium proved that teams actually had to play football, while France and Denmark had failed to do it. The English team were playing too cautiously, they were not eager enough to win... I like the teams who fight until the end," Dvorkovich said.
Belgium defeated England 1-0 on Thursday, while France and Denmark had played out the first goalless draw of the 2018 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday, with all the four sides reaching the round of 16.
According to the Local Organizing Committee chairman, the upcoming encounters between Mexico and Brazil, and Argentina and France could become "the glories" of the tournament.
The 2018 FIFA World Cup kicked off on June 14 and will continue until July 15, with the matches being played in 11 cities across Russia. The knockout stage of the tournament will start on Saturday.
