TEL AVIV, June 6 (Sputnik) - Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman criticized on Wednesday Argentina's decision to cancel a planned friendly against Israel.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Israeli Embassy in Argentina announced the "suspension" of Saturday’s game in Jerusalem because of what it called "threats and provocations" aimed at Argentina captain Lionel Messi.
“It is a shame that the football players from Argentina did not withstand the pressure of those who hate Israel, whose only goal is to violate our basic right to self-defense and to destroy Israel,” Liberman's Twitter post read.
Earlier, the Palestinian Ambassador to Argentina condemned the match between the two countries, while a group of protesters staged a rally against the game during the Argentine squad's training session in Barcelona.
“Don't surrender to a group of anti-Semites who support terror,” Liberman added.
According to media reports, Argentina are currently looking for a new opponent to play as they continue their preparations for the FIFA World Cup, which gets underway on June 14.
Two-time World Cup winners Argentina are set to face Iceland, Croatia and Nigeria in Group D.
Israel failed to qualify for the tournament finishing fourth in their group during the World Cup qualifiers.
