CHISINAU, June 5 (Sputnik) - Moldovan President Igor Dodon said on Tuesday that he would attend the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Russia at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
He also mentioned he would be supporting Russia in the opening match of the tournament.
“Next week I will be at the World Cup, as I have promised Putin after he sent me an invitation… I will be supporting Russia in the opening match, but there are several teams I like,” Dodon said in an interview with TV channel NTV Moldova.
The Moldovan head of state added that the World Cup would be a good opportunity to meet many foreign leaders, including Putin.
Dodon, who became Moldovan president in December 2016, has repeatedly stated both in his election campaign and after taking office that Moldova needed to restore strategic relations with Russia.
The World Cup will be held in 11 Russian cities from June 14 to July 15. Russia will play Saudi Arabia in the opening match at the Luzhniki Stadium, while the two countries are joined in Group A by Egypt and Uruguay.
