"A total of 11 games were held [in Moscow] during the World Cup and Moscow has been the most popular city. More than 3 million tourists visited our city... including 1.2 million who came from outside the former Soviet republics," Gulyaev said at a press conference.

He added that the majority of tourists came to Russia from China and the United States, with German, Dutch and French nationals rounding out the top five.

This year's tournament will come to an end at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium on Sunday, with France facing Croatia in the final.
