The 33-year-old scored his first-ever World Cup hat-trick and opened the scoring in the fourth minute from the penalty spot. He netted his second just before half time, following a mistake by Spanish goalkeeper David De Gea.

Ronaldo saved his best till last as he curled a sublime free kick past De Gea in the 88th minute.

"I'm very happy, it is a personal best [the hat-trick], one more in my career and the most important thing is to highlight what the team has done. We have played one of the favorite teams to win the World Cup, we have been winning twice and drew and I think it was a fair result. The game was about to end and we managed to equalize so we are happy," Ronaldo said as quoted by the BBC.

The 2018 FIFA World Cup kicked off on Thursday and will continue until July 15, with a total of 64 matches set to be played at 12 stadiums across 11 Russian cities.

Portugal will play their next match against Morocco on June 20 and their final group game against Iran on June 25.
