NOVOGORSK, June 2 (Sputnik) - Russia defender Andrei Semyonov said on Saturday he was sure the team were “doing everything right” in their preparations for the World Cup, which kicks-off in less than two weeks time.
Russia, who suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Austria in a pre-World Cup friendly in Innsbruck on Wednesday, will play Turkey in Moscow on June 5 in their final warm-up match before the tournament gets underway.
"We are sure we are doing everything right. If we play at the World Cup like we did during the first 30 minutes of the match against Austria, everything will be fine… We controlled the game. When you play at such a pace all the time, your opponent gets tired, and this frees up space,” Semyonov told journalists.
The defender added that the Russian team were unable to keep up their intensity after the half hour mark during their friendly with Austria, as they were tired following their intensive training sessions.
Semyonov is part of head coach Stanislav Cherchesov’s preliminary 28-man squad, which he will have to cut down to 23 players by June 4. He said all his teammates were hoping to make the final cut, but they were putting personal interests aside in order to support their country during their home World Cup.
The World Cup gets underway on June 14, with the final to be played on July 15. The hosts have been drawn in Group A along with Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Uruguay.
