MOSCOW, June 29 (Sputnik) - Russian lawmaker and former Russia head coach Valery Gazzaev said Friday that CSKA and Russia midfielder Aleksandr Golovin would enjoy the support of English side FC Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich if he joined the club.
Earlier, media reported that a host of European sides, including Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, Juventus, Napoli and Monaco, were interested in the 22-year-old footballer.
"I'd like to note that the support of Chelsea owner will be a great advantage if Golovin is transferred to the club. Chelsea owner is one of our own kind, he's Russian... Roman Abramovich. A great opportunity for Aleksandr [Golovin]! ... Golovin is a serious man who can consolidate his position in the English team," Gazzaev told journalists.
He added that Golovin, who has been capped 21 times for Russia, would have to continue showing a good performance at the World Cup to "gain a foothold" in Chelsea.
"In order to gain a foothold in Chelsea's starting line-up, he needs to play well at the World Cup. He has already proved his high level, but everything will depend on his diligence... Golovin needs to study the way [other] Russians played in England and not to repeat their mistakes," Gazzaev said.
Golovin’s contract with CSKA Moscow will last until the end of the 2020/21 season. He has made 113 appearances and scored 13 goals for the club.
The 2018 FIFA World Cup kicked off on June 14 and will continue until July 15, with the matches being played in 11 cities across Russia.
