KALININGRAD, June 29 (Sputnik) - The average stadium occupancy rate reached almost 98 percent in the matches held during the group stage of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
A total of 48 matches were played during the group stage at 12 stadiums across 11 Russian cities, with a total of 2,178,894 people attending and the average attendance being 45,394 spectators. All the matches held at Moscow's Spartak and Luzhniki arenas were played in front of a sell-out crowd. The average stadium occupancy rate was 97,89 percent during the group stage of the tournament.
The knockout stage kicks off on Saturday. A total of 16 matches will be held at eight venues. Hosts Russia, who finished second in Group A, will play Group B winners Spain at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium on Sunday.
